Christos led her back to her cell. “It doesn’t have to be this way,” Christos said. “You understand that, Mrs. Holt? Yes?”

She faced him. “There is never another way for people like Kem and his son. You know it and I know it.”

He closed the cell door gently; still the clang gave her a start. She put her hand over her ears. The ringing continued to vibrate in her ears.

Christos wanted her to spill the beans so he could get Kem thrown out of his country. These guys played by their own rules. That was a fact. Bo and his family were her only priorities now. She wouldn’t fall for any of Christos’s acts of kindness. That was all it was. An act.
